Which Cards to Buy, When, and Why

In this section I have some information for beginners about each expansion set.  Some of this is merely my opinion.  If any of the specific card information I have listed here is incorrect, please let me know and I will change it.
Some of this information was partially made possible by the efforts of Gary Martin and his extensive, comprehensive OP checklist.

For a long time I have tried to think of the best recommendation for which cards to buy for new players.  In my opinion, it is probably best to buy the cards in the order that they were released, with a few minor choices after the fourth or fifth set.  In all honesty, OverPower was not really set up for new players to jump on at any time, at least not with the ability to really compete in tournament play.  Which of course is the main point that I want to make with this entire web site.  OverPower is not about winning tournaments, but should be about having fun playing the game, win or lose.  Some of the sets simply do not include the basic cards that will be required to play the game, not to mention that they will not have a decent compliment of characters that could be used in a successful team.  Even the sets that have starter decks are not really the best choice for a beginner, as they are sometimes un-playable in tournament play in one way or another.  This is the cold hard truth and I do not want to mislead anyone.
Hopefully, with the expansion of this section, I can give new players some help in deciding which set they should buy first, or next.
Here is the order I recommend:

#1 Original Marvel set - An absolute must have.

#2 Powersurge - An excellent compliment to the first set.

#3 Mission Control - Some cards that are definitely useful.

#4 IQ - This could replace Original as your first set, but you will still need Original anyway.

#5 Monumental - When you feel ready for Locations, go for this one.

#6 Classic - You could trade for the best cards of this set, in order to skip this one.

#7 X-Men - What can I say, this was the first set that we, the Reserves*, actually partially designed ourselves and there are many people who have said how some of these cards are highly playable.

The other remaining sets - DC, JLA, and Image - could be purchased at any time you prefer.  If you are a big fan of either of those comic companies, then do not let me dictate when you should buy them.

The future of OverPower as it was, The Marvels, could have been it's saving grace.  But alas, things were out of our control.  Who knows, maybe it will still see the light of day in one form or another.
