Original release - starters and boosters
Released in the Fall of 1995

Perhaps every single popular Marvel character is in this set, so this is the best set to buy first for anyone who likes to read Marvel comics.  There are 5 Specials for each of these characters, all of which are simple to play since the game just started.  Except for Intellect, which was introduced in DC and then IQ, this set has a full compliment of Power cards which are required to play the game.

Why is this a perfect first set for a beginner?  Anyone that would be interested in playing OverPower would probably have some knowledge of Marvel comics or the Marvel animated series'.  This set is filled with nothing but the most popular characters in Marvel comics, with only several exceptions in order to keep something worthwhile for later sets.  As most of the people who might be most interested in the game may be kids, they will recognize most of the characters' names and unique abilities.  As the game was in it's early stages, the Specials are not that complex so the game play is fairly easy to understand.  Only the basic card types are in this set, so there is less to learn than the other sets.

Basic card totals for this set:

Pros
Cons
The most popular Marvel characters
A few of the most popular characters are too rare, and not that common among most tournament decks
Specials are easy to understand
Teamworks are too rare
Some Specials are not as rare in this set as a similar one might be in another expansion
Some characters have "inaccurate" stats
Complete set with all the cards needed to be able to play the game, for now
