"Avoid 1 attack" allows a Character to avoid any type of attack. When used to avoid a Teamwork card, it will only avoid one of the three possible attacks and does not prevent the follow up attacks from occurring. "Teammate may avoid one attack" allows a teammate to avoid the attack, including the Reserve Character, and cannot be used to avoid an attack on the Character playing the Special.

Cable's Cover Fire, Captain America's Mighty Shield, Mr. Fantastics's Protect Teammate, Nightcrawler's Bamf!, and Silver Surfer's Energy Protection, Wonder Woman's Gift of Flight, and Supergirl's Telekinetic Shield should all be considered AD Specials

Meta #22 An avoid can only be used in the case that (a) there is a Character targeted and (b) the attack being defended qualifies as the type of attack possibly indicated by the Special.

Meta #67 An 'avoid' Special can only be played when the target of the attack is the player of the Special.
