X-Men Overpower brought with it a slew of new Clone/Variant characters. It also brought with it some funky new rulings involving them. So let's get into it, 'kay?
There are two types of Alternate heroes: Clones and Variants.
What is a Clone?
Clones are two (or more) characters that are considered to be the same when setting up a Team or Battlesite. They may have a different grid or Inherent Ability, but play the same special cards. Most clones are easy to spot. They have the original Character's name, but also a second 'identity' preceeded by a colon. For example, Havok: Mutant X is a Clone of Havok. Havok: Mutant X is considered to be the Mutant X version of Havok. Additionally, all non-IQ characters are clone of their IQ counterparts and all of the Onslaught Characters are clones of their reprints.
[EXCEPTIONS: X-Men: The Original Team is actually a variant of Professor X; Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu is an original character; Storm: Neutralized is both a Clone of Storm and Storm: Bloodstorm, and a Variant of The Morlocks; Daemonite Voodoo is a clone of Voodoo]

What is a Variant Character?
Variant Characters are completely different characters from their original. They have different grids, names and Inherent Abilities. They are easy to spot because they have Inherent Abilities which allow them to use their original characters specials, and they have no specials of their own. For example, Dark Beast is a Variant of Beast because he has an Inherent ability that allows him to play Beast specials.
